We'll side the house with this cement fiber board from Nichiha http://nichiha.com/. It's a little over a half inch thick, and has a great look of cedar shake shingles without the maintenance of the real wood. It comes in 9" tall by 8' long boards in a multitude of pre-stained colors. We've chosen the mahagony. The Nichiha a is lesser known brand than HardyBoard, but it's thicker, has a 50-yr warranty, and is about 1/3 less cost. Several blogs from New England to the deep South give this stuff a two-thunb's-up.
